Devouring the Midnight Sun in Finnish Lakeland

Finland is the definition of an understated travel destination. Growing in popularity in both winter and summer in recent years, it was only a matter of time until a beautiful little Insta shot hurtled Finland to the top of my to-travel list. Scrolling through endless sunsets, sunrises, mountain views and sweet postcards-from-paradises (like any community, the travel influencers are known for grabbing a strong hold of those clickable cliches), I spotted an aerial shot of a single kayak paddling out on glassy water, bathed in golden sunlight. “Midnight in Finland,” the caption read. Wait – midnight?! I knew that the sun stayed high in the summer, but I didn’t realise that it literally never sunk below the horizon?!

My imagination ran wild, and all of a sudden there was nothing more important to me than recreating that moment IRL. So I did.  I scoured Airbnb and booked a cabin in the woods. I recruited my dad into meeting me and drive up into Finnish Lakeland and flew to Helsinki in late June on a cheap €100 return flight from Amsterdam.

I am ecstatic to report that it lived up to all my wildest Insta-fantasies. #travelporn

Unforgettable experience, driving through the middle of the night in day light to get to the idyllic cabin was amazing.
Being eaten alive by the hardcore Finish mosquitos was not so amazing……
Fantastic adventure, thanks for allowing me to tag along. πŸ™‚
